Dancehall artiste Shenseea and soca star Destra Garcia each earned a nomination in the Best Caribbean Music Act category of the 2023 Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards.

The nominations were announced in London on Thursday.

Dancehall artistes Popcaan, Byron Messia, and Valiant as well as reggae artiste and Grammy winner Kabaka Pyramid are also among the nominees.

This is the first nomination for Byron Messia who has had a sterling year on the international music charts with Talibans. It is also the first nod for Valiant, Kabaka Pyramid, and Destra Garcia.

For Shenseea this is her fourth MOBO nomination. She won the Best Reggae Act title in 2021.

Interestingly, the Best Reggae Act category was renamed Best Caribbean Music Act last year.

Popcaan has nine nominations to date and two wins, 2015 and again in 2016.

The MOBO Awards is a British music award which was founded by Kanya King in 1997. The programme seeks to honour achievements in “music of black origin”, including hip hop, grime, UK drill, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music.

The MOBO Awards will take place February 7 at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, London.
