For the first time in its history, Jamaica will have a representative in the Judo competition at the Olympic Games.

Ebony Drysdale-Daley will represent the Caribbean nation after qualifying for the games slated to happen next month. Her qualification was confirmed by the Jamaican Judo Association on Tuesday (June 22). She will compete in the 70kg category on July 28 in Tokyo, Japan.

“On this day in sports, Jamaica qualified for the Summer Olympics. We made history” the Jamaica Olympic Association commented on Twitter.

The Jamaica Judo Association became a member of the Jamaican Olympic Association in 2018 but has since received support from the entity in funding its Olympic campaign. This campaign has churned out great results in the form of Drysdale-Daley.

This will now see Jamaica compete in five sporting disciplines at the Tokyo Games joining boxing, track and field, gymnastics and aquatics, and swimming.

The 26-year-old was born in the UK but switched allegiance to Jamaica. Since representing Jamaica, Drysdale-Daley has already created history after winning gold in the 2019 Commonwealth Games Judo Championships.
